Active Bystanding

A bystander is an onlooker who does not intervene in a situation where another needs help. We are all bystanders, in some way or the other. But we don’t have to be. This session allows you to recognise what forms of injustice or oppression you may be seeing but not involving yourself. It allows you to understand why you may be doing the same, challenge some limiting beliefs and unshackle your moral instincts. You will differentiate between a bystander role and the bystander effect.

Active Bystanding is defined as taking action when you observe unacceptable behaviour. This can be done creatively and respectfully, in a way that makes it safe for all involved, including the bystander and the source of the offensive behaviour (who may not be fully aware of the impact of their actions). If we are not mindful of our own inner motives when we step into other people’s dramas, we can become offenders in the process.

This 2 hour webinar helps you reflect on

  • What bystanding is
  • Why we are bystanders sometimes
  • How active bystanding can make a difference
  • How we could challenge some beliefs that limit our options
  • What opportunities we can spot for making a difference
